New Year’s Day – League Two Round-up

Happy New Year to you all, we hope you all had a fabulous Christmas and holiday period whatever you were doing? We just hope you all managed to catch some football at some point with your family and friends. We watched loads here at Football Nation and wanted to bring you a EFL League 2 update from some of the fixtures that were played yesterday.

MANSFILED 3 v CARLISLE 1

Mansfield 3 v Carlisle 1 – Mansfield are back in the play off places after Carlisle made it easy for
them to pick up all three points. Keith Curle’s return to his old club Carlisle didn’t go well at all after a terrible start, his team did try to get back into the game but in the end Mansfield saw them off when Hemmings got his second goal of the afternoon. A great start to the New Year for Mansfield then and that is now just one defeat in eighteen matches now.

Newport 2 v Exeter 1 – A first three points for Newport of the festive season as they started the new year with a hard thought win. Top scorer Patrick Amond was back in the goals again after just six minutes and scoring last week too. Exeter arrived in south Wales having lost four consecutive away games and this made it five, even though they did give it a good go. Jayden Stockley got his 13th goal of season to equalise but Newport scored again to give them their first league victory at home in seven games to cement their place in the top half.

Colchester 0 v Cambridge 0 – A point a piece then for both teams, which means John McGreal’s Colchester side have now gone six games unbeaten. Cambridge are also on the back of a four match unbeaten run too and nothing could separate the pair in this goalless match.

BARNET 1 v SWINDON 2

Barnet 1 v Swindon 2 – The away side took the lead through Ellis Iandolo but John Akinde equalised just three minutes later. However Swindon kept up their impressive away form and got a 2-1 lead before half-time thanks to Matt Preston and it stayed like that until the end. That is now nine wins from twelve on the road for Swindon which is the best record in the division.

Crewe 2 v Grimsby 0 – That’s three wins in five for Crewe Alexandra now as Chris Porter got their first goal of the day and his tenth of the season. Grimsby have not won in their last five games.

STEVENAGE 4 v CHELTENHAM 1

Stevenage 4 v Cheltenham 1 – After one win in five for Stevenage they needed a bright
start to the year, but they went behind to Cheltenham after just two minutes. They bounced back quickly and strongly through Godden and Pett to give themselves a 2-1 half-time lead. Tom Pitt’s first half goal was his sixth of the season and he got his seventh in second half for a great comeback.

Yeovil 1 v Crawley 2 – Yeovil threw away a 3-2 lead to lose 4-3 at the end of the year away to Morecambe as they continue to leak goals. Another big issue this season has been keeping players on the pitch with numerous red cards throughout their campaign. Two in this match and that is the second time this season they’d had two players sent off in same match. In total they had four red cards just in November as well. Three wins in four for Crawley Town though as they came from behind to win.

In other news, Forest Green remain rooted to the bottom of the table and Morecambe’s game was abandoned against Accrington due to a waterlogged pitch.
