Salford City’s pre-season away trip to Trafford

Donning their new Super 6 sponsored kit, Salford came into this, their final pre-season game of the summer with a massive hint of youth about them. I arrived around half an hour before kicked, I paid my £5 to get in and headed to the bar for a pint. On coming out of the clubhouse I looked across the pitch to see both team warming up, I recognised quite a few of the old Trafford lads but Salford’s team was very youthful.

There was only a couple of hundred people in the ground when I got there but more and more came in right up until kick off. I reckon there must have been close to 500 or so in there in total. Not a bad turn out at all and it’s always a good friendly atmosphere at Shawe View. I grabbed another drink before kick off and then found a good spot to stand just behind the Trafford’s goal and to the left.

TRAFFORD 0 v 2 SALFORD CITY Pre-Season Friendly Tuesday 1st August 2017

Salford started the brighter but their big number 5 at the back seemed to take ten minutes or so to find his feet after numerous mis-kicks to begin with. Once he got settled though he looked fine and Salford had a few attacks down the right-hand side but nothing came of it. After ten minutes they finally got the ball down the left flank and their number 7 started to cause a bit or confusion. Eventually a goal did come on 13 minutes, Trafford and not got into the game at all and it was Salford’s left back that got forward and pulled the ball back for Anthony Dudley to slot home from about 16 yards.

Salford’s number 2 and right-back impressed me and stood out as a really good player, in particular getting forward and he nearly made it two but for a deflection. He was involved in making it 2-0 on 24 minutes when Dominic Hale curled a low effort in from twenty yards with left Trafford’s keeper and their number arguing with each other. After that though, Trafford got back into the game when they hit the woodwork but Salford were easily the better team in the first half and even hit the post themselves.

Into the second half, chances came for both teams and Trafford were definitely much better than they were in the first 45 minutes. However, even with Salford’s very young team they held out and kept a clean sheet. Both teams made loads of changes in the second half as well and as the sun light fell and the flood lights came on. The games finished at a slower pace but to be fair to both teams they were still trying to score.

A good game all round and my first live football match of this season was enjoyed. Trafford still have another pre-season game this Saturday against Evo Stik Premier League locals Altrincahm. Anyway, I finished my pint and headed off for one more in the Bird I’th Hand pub just down the road.

Vanarama National League – Review of the Season

In the past nine months the Vanarama National League has been to all four corners of this country on nearly every night of the week and witnessed some truly fantastic moments. Promotion battles, relegation battles, play-off battles and of course FA Cup triumphs and tribulations. Below is a quick and brief review of how the season went for some of the clubs involved along the way.

We start with Tranmere Rovers, the club that was in the football league for 94 years before being relegated to this league in 2015. They didn’t let it get to them though and only narrowly missed out in the play-offs last season and continued that into the start of this campaign. Having signed a new sponsorship deal with one of the leading online bookmakers, their finances looked in better shape than they have for some time, and this started to reflect in their on field performances. They were the early pace setters and had a 100% five match winning run until a draw against Southport at the end of August.

They were closely being followed by Dagenham & Redbridge, Forest Green, Lincoln, Gateshead and Dover in the chasing pack. Tranmere then stopped scoring and problems mounted for Gary Brabin, with no wins in four he was surprisingly sacked with Micky Mellon taking over.

Dover’s Ricky Miller with a hat-trick to beat Forest Green

Forest Green Rovers were the actual pre-season favourites and by the end of September had taken over at the top of league themselves by one point. One defeat they had suffered in that time was to one of the chasing pack, when they lost to Dover in one of the games of the season. That didn’t stop them though as they then went on an eleven match unbeaten run and increased their one point lead to nine by mid-November.

Eastleigh were having major managerial problems as they sacked Chris Todd early on, Ronnie Moore came in but soon left. Into November and Martin Allen was in charge but he didn’t last long before Richard Hill was back for a second stint. They weren’t the only ones as Guiseley, Southport, Braintree, Wrexham and York all sacked their managers in the first few months.

York City had four seasons back up in League Two but now weren’t going well once again as they struggled towards the foot of the table. Another old league team were Lincoln City and they were flying high in the league as well as in the FA Cup of course. They were under new management with the Cowley brothers, Danny and Nicky now in charge after they moved on from Braintree. It looked like the right move as well as they sat pretty at the top of league come the turn of the year.

Tranmere Rover were second, followed again by a chasing pack of Forest Green, Dagenham & Redbridge, Barrow and Dover with York City now rock bottom. This is a league review I know but how can we not mention what both Sutton United and Lincoln did in the FA Cup. Sutton got to the 5th Round before losing to Arsenal. Lincoln went one better and in to the quarter-finals becoming the first non-league team to reach that stage in 103 years. They went out to Arsenal then as well.

Lincoln City became the first non-league team to reach the FA Cup quarter Finals in 103 years

Back to the league campaign and Aldershot really kick started their season after Christmas, by going on a brilliant run in the second half of the season which took them to the play-offs. Lincoln themselves didn’t let their cup distractions get in the way and The Imps were promoted as winners.

Going into the final weekend and games of the season with just Southport and North Ferriby already confirmed as relegated, meant two more of six could still join them. York got the draw that they thought they would need, but due to other results not going their way it might they went down along with Braintree. The teams that survived to fight another day were Guiseley, Woking Chester and Torquay.

Forest Green Rovers promoted to the Football League

The play-offs were great games and some fantastic goals in both ties. With Tranmere beating Aldershot 5-2 on aggregate and Forest Green beating Dagenham & Redbridge 3-1 on aggregate. Which meant Dagenham & Redbridge were back at Wembley to try to get to football league for the very first time. Unlike Tranmere who were just desperate to get back to where they believe they belong.

It wasn’t to be though as Forest Green Rovers ran out as 3-1 winners. Not a bad achievement for a small village and their manager Mark Cooper. Job done. Promoted to the football league.

Forest Green v Tranmere Rovers – Vanarama National League Play-Off Final

The battle to reach the Football League climaxed yesterday with Forest Green trying to get into league football for the very first time. Whilst Tranmere were trying to get back to where they still believe they belong after two years now in the Vanarama National League.

There was certainly plenty at stake before kick off, with the new money and ambitious boys of Forest Green in one corner. The team from Nailsworth in Gloucestershire have lost around five million pounds in recent years chasing the promotion dream of league football and having lost the final last year to Grimsby were desperate for that not to happen again this year.

As for the Tranmere themselves, they have all their history and of course traditions of an old-fashioned club of 133 years. Where back in the day but many years ago had three attempts and appearances in the play-offs to get into the Premier League. It wasn’t to be though and now they’re were they are after relegation after relegation over the years. This was also their first Wembley visit for 17 years after losing 2-1 to Leicester City in the League Cup Final.

This season Tranmere and Forest Green respectively finished easily second and third behind the best team in the league in Lincoln, so going into this they both had the belief they could win this massive game! Managers Mark Cooper and Nicky Mellon had done their bit too and now it was down to the players to perform and handle the pressure on the pitch at Wembley Stadium.

Forest were at full strength at kick off whereas Tranmere had about seven or eight injuries so the despite finishing nine ahead of them, the Green Army knew they had a chance and it didn’t take them too long to score. In the eleventh minute after slow build up play, a long-range effort from Kaiyne Woolery took Tranmere keeper Davies by surprise to give them the lead.

Doidge put Green back in front just before half-time

Connor Jennings wasn’t messing round though as he got Tranmere level just ten minutes later with a brilliant strike in front of his own fans to bring the game level. It was probably undeserved at the point as they had been poor but the goal got their confidence up and soon chances were coming for both teams. None more so than on 36 minutes when Marsh-Brown brought the ball down superbly and chipped Davies from a tight ankle but the keeper moved his feet back quickly to claw it off the line.

Davies though, couldn’t do anything about Doidge’s strike five minutes later as he smashed in a great shot which was very similar to Jennings’ earlier. The goals didn’t stop there because just when you thought it was going to be 2-1 at half-time to Forest Green, they made it 3-1 after an awful defensive error. Ridehalgh miss controlled a bouncing ball and Wollery was in again and he took his time as he slotted the ball passed Davies once again for his second of the day.

Woolery’s second Wembley goal of the day made it 3-1 and that’s how it finished

That is how finished in the end too. Tranmere tried to get back into it in the second half but they never really put Forest Green under too much pressure. And with a two goal lead, Mark Cooper’s team saw out the game after getting the job pretty much done in the those few late minutes in the first half. Which means they can taste league football for the first time ever very soon. They will be relishing the day when their new fixtures for next season come out. Very well done.

Bolton v Peterborough – League One

Football Nation watched as Bolton Wanderers beat Peterborough United to claim automatic promotion on the last day of the League One season. Bolton only needed a draw to guarantee themselves the second automatic promotion spot, but they took all 3 points in an emphatic win in front of a nearly full Macron Stadium.

Phil Parkinson’s side showed their intent early on, building a succession of attacks down the right through the lively Filipe Morais.

Filipe Morais puts in yet another cross from the right.

This tactic eventually paid off for the opening goal, although actually on this occasion it was centre back Dorian Dervite who supplied a quality ball into the box. It fell perfectly for Jem Karacan who cooly guided the volley home with the side of his foot.

Karacan scores the first

Peterborough managed a couple of attacks in the first half, but never managed to trouble Mark Howard in the Bolton goal. One last ditch tackle by Mark Beevers did stop what looked a certain goal though.

In the second half the home side upped the pace even more. Bolton have been deadly from set pieces this season and this was underlined when goalscoring centre half David Wheater headed home the second. From then on there was only going to be one winner.

A nice move saw Josh Vela release Adam Le Fondre who smashed in the third, and that was game over. It was party time for the long suffering home fans. Some of them jumped the gun by starting their pitch invasion before the final whistle. There was a break in play while the players, stewards and police cleared the pitch. But a few seconds later the final whistle did blow and the celebrations could officially begin.

The whistle actually had gone this time

It was a deserved win and a deserved promotion, and we enjoyed the match and the atmosphere.

Predictions For Next Season

So Bolton will be playing Championship football again next season, but how will they get on? Well, for a start they won’t expect to be enjoying back to back promotions. You can’t actually bet on next season yet, but once the odds are released I expect most bookies will offer very high odds on Bolton finishing in the playoffs. A solid mid table finish is the best they can realistically hope for.

The fact is they need to strengthen if they are to survive and they’ll need to sort their finances out to do that. This promotion was based mainly on their defence, which was not only the best in League One, but their centre backs also scored a lot of goals from set pieces. I think both David Wheater and Mark Beevers are good enough to be successful in the Championship, but it’s in midfield and up front where they will need to improve.

The problem for Phil Parkinson is that he won’t expect to get much money to spend, if any. So he may need to work his magic in the loan and free transfer market in order to add the necessary strength to their squad.

For Peterborough, they shouldn’t be too despondent despite a mid table finish. It looks like they have one or two players such as Maddison who look to be of a much higher standard than the rest, and they’ll do well to hang on to them over the summer. If they do then they could definitely at least make the play offs next season.

Lincoln City v Ipswich Town – FA Cup 3rd Round replay

FA Cup giant killings were in full swing in the end last night then, with both Lincoln City and Sutton United doing non-league football proud.

Ahead of Lincoln’s game against Ipswich last night, there was a fitting tribute by everyone inside Sincil Bank for Graham Taylor who sadly passed away last week age 72. Taylor who had nine years at Lincoln, four as a player where he finished his career, before eventually taking over as manager and leading them to a promotion in 1976. A true football man and very well-respected.

Onto the game and the focus and chat was also on Lincoln’s manager Danny Cowley and his assistant and brother Nicky, who joined from Braintree at the start of the season. The pair have guided a high flying Lincoln to the top of the Vanarama National League currently, where they lead by a couple of points with games in hand, as they try to get back into the football league. Where the club has been since being relegated back in 2011. Last night’s focus though was well and truly on the FA Cup as they tried to guide Lincoln to the Fourth Round for the first time since the mid-seventies, when that man Graham Taylor was in charge.

Lincoln were desperately unlucky to not get the win away at Portman Road in the first place. On the other hand, Ipswich were lucky to get the replay. Former Manchester United forward, who’s on loan from Leicester scored twice in that game and got the equaliser with four minutes to go. He’s the man in form too having scored one goal in the game before the FA Cup tie and also getting two more last weekend against Blackburn Rovers.

Rumours have it Mick McCarthy is now under real pressure and the results show that, from the results and their mid-table position you can see why. They’re currently sitting 14th but they’ve not had any run of form all season with just random results all over the place, lose at home, win away, win at home, lose away etc.

In the first half hour there wasn’t much in it at all and if you didn’t know the position of the two teams, you’d have thought they were in the same league such was there battling spirit and good play of Lincoln. There was only half chances for both teams until the first best chance came, a great ball was whipped in from the right and Woodyard was so close to giving Lincoln the lead. However, he connected with the ball on his shoulder rather than his head.

The home side kept getting plenty of free kicks too which put the Ipswich defense under great pressure, but they managed to deal with it. No more chances came though until the very last minute of the first half, when Luke Waterfall hit the ball on the bounce and Dean Gerken made a cracking one-handed save!

Rhead caused the confusion with his height and battling spirit and he continued that into the second half as well. He was gradually causing Ipswich more and more problems in the air. Mick McCarthy must have gone mental at this team at half time, but not much seemed to change second half so it didn’t work and they were very poor. And it was Lincoln that looked more like the actual league team.

However, Lincoln couldn’t get that goal and it looked like it was going into extra-time. However, with Ipswich trying to avoid that and get a winner themselves, they looked to get a free-kick high into the box as they sent their defenders forward. It was a poor cross though and with in ten seconds Lincoln had broke quickly and after a superb turn and pass in to Nathan Arnold, who kept his composure to round their keeper to slot home into an empty net to send Lincoln into the next round. They’ll now play at home vs Brighton & Hove Albion. The other results last night were:

AFC Wimbledon 1-3 Sutton United
Barnsley 1-2 Blackpool
Burnley 1-0 Sunderland
Fleetwood Town 0-1 Bristol City
Crystal Palace 2-1 Bolton Wanderers
